Meet the farmer allergic to his produce

Imagine being allergic to the product you farm?

That’s the situation for Scenic Rim crayfish farmer, Rob Hutchings.

It wasn’t always that way but Rob says after years of handling the native Australian crustacean, he’s developed an allergy to his produce.

It’s so severe that he reacts just seconds after eating crayfish. Thankfully he can still handle crayfish and every year breeds hundreds of thousands of Red Claw for the local Australian market.

Rob is a former University of Queensland marine biologist who swapped academia for aquaculture.

I recently visited Rob’s crayfish farm in the Scenic Rim to learn more about what he does.

Hear what Rob has to say about crayfish farming and the day he learned he was allergic to his herd.
